Hypnosis - Frequently Asked Questions
Although Hypnotherapy is a natural, effective and safe process when carried out by a properly trained and qualified practitioner, many people considering Hypnotherapy will quite naturally have questions.
Should I tell my doctor I am thinking of seeing a Clinical Hypnotherapist?
If you are being treated for an illness or problem then it is essential you let your GP or specialist know you are considering a complementary therapy. There is a duty of care to the patient which means that the Doctor needs to know what is going on.
If you are not being treated then you can ask your hypnotherapist or GP for their advice.

With hypnosis you will not put on weight, get any substitute cravings, nor have to use chemical substitutes which may have side effects
Will I be made to do anything I don’t want to do?
No, even assuming the hypnotherapist was inclined to try, your unconscious would immediately reject the suggestion and you would wake up.
What happens if I can’t be hypnotised?
Everyone has the potential to be hypnotised as it is similar to the state just before you fall asleep at night or wake in the morning. Success depends upon the rapport you and your therapist build up before you close your eyes and start the process.
Fear of the unknown sometimes means that you will not go as deeply into trance on your first session but this is fine and the treatment will still be effective.
How long does it take to work?
Stopping smoking, for example, is often instant or within the first few hours after treatment, whereas in other situations the unconscious will start to work on your issues immediately to create your best solution but it may take time for your conscious mind to become aware of the effects
Do I have to listen for it to work?
Your conscious mind can choose to listen or to wander off, it really makes no difference to the success of the treatment. Your unconscious mind will hear the message and go and do what it needs to.
How does it work?
No-one really knows for sure but basically your unconscious mind will receive the messages that it needs to act on and will then go away and create a solution which is uniquely yours.
How many treatments will I need?
That depends on what you need hypnosis for. Many treatments are successful in only 1 or 2 sessions, some need a few more. It is not a long drawn out process though.
Can I experience hypnosis for fun?
Sure, come for relaxation, improved confidence/memory, past life regression or a spiritual uplift. There are a number of ways in which hypnosis can benefit you
